CAR OWNER GARY MORTON’S WINNING STREAK AT 23 YEARS AND COUNTING

Holly, MI

Canadian, Gary Morton, was the last man to ever win a Super Modified race at Winchester Speedway. In fact, he won the last two events there. He won the 1989 and 1990 fall events at the speedway. Supers haven’t raced at Winchester Speedway in nearly twenty-two years. So technically, Morton has a winning streak that currently stands at twenty-three years.

Morton will be at the track this Sunday for the first time since 1990 when Must See Racing will debut its new Super Modified series. Morton wont be behind the wheel, but he will be supporting the event as a car owner with Brampton, Ontario, Canada’s Dave McKnight behind the wheel of his familiar #70. Morton recently recalled that chilly early November 1990 Sunday afternoon when Supers last ran Winchester Speedway. ”

The last time we were there we got booed by the fans ” Morton recalls. ” It wasn’t a pretty day. We tore up a lot of cars and they red flagged it. The fans got impatient. They ran some other stuff so we could get some cars repaired and finish the race. I ended up winning it “. Perhaps Sundays event will go a lot smoother than that long ago 1990 event.

Morton’s vast experience at the legendary Indiana speedway should help his driver out tremendously. The duo will be battling several other teams for a hefty payday. The winners share for Sunday’s event will be one of the biggest paydays of the year for the division. $6,000 will be on the line with another $1000 being paid for fast time thanks to BIOBASED.US as part of their ‘ Winners Circle Bonus ‘ sponsorship.

The event will have several significant headlines. This will be the first time in twenty-two years Supers have raced at Winchester. In addition, the new MSRSMS will be hosting its inaugural event. This will be the first time in the history of the speedway that Supers have raced with wings.

The entry early entry list was announced last week. Several name drivers including: AJ Russell, Tanner Swanson, Kody Swanson, Jack Smith, Kevin Shirey, Sondi Eden, Cord Ehrhart, Brandon Fisher, Jeff Gibson, Jon Henes, Gene Lee Gibson, Paul White, Larry Lehnert, Jim Paller, Matt Palmer, and Rich Reid headline the early entries. The ‘ Xtreme Speed Challenge ‘ is shaping up to be arguably one of the biggest open wheel events of 2012.

The Sprint Car entry list is already highlighted by Tampa, Florida’s Dave Steele who will be returning to competitive competition in the Midwest for the first time in two seasons. Other entries include, Tanner Swanson and Brian Olson, who picked up Must See Racing victories in events last month to kick off the 2012 season. Two-time defending MSRXSS champion Troy DeCaire is also entered. Others early entries include: Dave Baumgartner, Jason Blonde, Jeff Bloom, Collin Cabre, Jerry Caryer, Jason Cox, Todd Fayard, Kyle Flint, Brian Gerster, Kyle Hamilton, Jo Jo Helberg, Mike Larrison, Hank Lower, Jimmy McCune, Aaron Pierce, Kody Swanson, Jacob Wilson, and Billy Wease.

Multi-time United States Auto Club (USAC) champion and Indy 500 starter, Tom Bigelow, will serve as honorary Grand Marshal for this event. A meet and greet with fans is planned. Bigelow currently resides in Winchester and enjoyed great success at the speedway as a driver during his racing career.

There will be an open practice one day before the event May 19 from 2 – 6 P.M. to give teams additional track time. The Full Throttle Modifieds and Vore’s Welding FWD Compacts will also be part of this racing extravaganza.

Jake Blackhurst of Mapleton, Ill., leads the championship in the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series going into events Friday (May 18) at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill., and Saturday (May 19) at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway, his hometown track.

“I never dreamed I’d be in the points lead in my second year in a Midget,” the 16-year-old Blackhurst said. “It’s pretty awesome.”

Blackhurst has a 115-point advantage, 745-630, over second-place Brett Anderson of Belleville, Ill., after six events. He won his first POWRi Midget race at Lucas Oil Speedway on May 5 and also has finishes of fifth at Grain Valley, Mo., sixth at Jacksonville, Ill., eighth at Macon, Ill., and 11th at Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, Texas.

“We’ve been consistent and had a boost in points with the win,” Blackhurst said. “We want to stay consistent and protect the point lead.”

Blackhurst was the POWRi Midget and the National Midget Rookie of the Year in 2011 in his first season on dirt and in a Midget. He spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons in USAC Ford Focus Midgets, taking the Midwest Pavement championship in 2010 and drove Kenyon Midgets in the previous two seasons.

Blackhurst finished 11th in the 2011 POWRi Midget points. He had five top-10s in 14 features including 10th, 15th, 16th and 18th at one-fifth mile Belle-Clair and 11th at quarter-mile Peoria. He’s excited about returning to Peoria.

“It’s always pretty cool to race in front of friends and family,” Blackhurst said. “It’s nice they don’t have to drive four or five hours to be there.”

Blackhurst drove for Bryan Clauson Racing last year, but the team is being operated by him and father/crew chief Paul Blackhurst this season.

“They (Clauson team) help us, but it’s just me and my dad at the track this year,” Blackhurst said.

Blackhurst is coming off one of his most impressive drives in a Midget. He started 22nd and finished eighth in the feature at one-fifth mile Macon last Saturday (May 12).

“I’m pretty proud of it,” Blackhurst said. “I got caught up in a wreck in my heat and had to go the B-main (where he finished fourth out of 21 cars). I stayed smooth and didn’t overdrive the car in the main. It’s pretty sweet to come from 22nd to eighth.”

POWRi is co-sanctioning Peoria with the Stark Automotive Group/Mid-State Equipment Badger Midget Series.

The POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series also are racing at Belle-Clair and Peoria. Joe B. Miller of Millersville, Mo., leads the championship by 30 points, 320-290, over second-place Jacob Patton of Bethalto, Ill., after two events. Justin Peck of Monrovia, Ind., is third with 270.

Miller finished second at Macon and eighth at Jacksonville in season’s two features. Patton was seventh at Macon and sixth at Jacksonville. Peck was third at Macon and 12th at Jacksonville.

POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series top-10 points standings (after six of 31 events); 1. Jake Blackhurst 745, 2. Brett Anderson 630, 3. Andrew Felker 610, 4. Chett Gehrke 595, 5. Chris Bell 555, 6. Zach Daum 540, 7. Tyler Thomas 530, 8. Garrett Aitken 515, 9. Tyler Courtney 475, 10. Brad Kuhn 430.
POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series 2012 race winners: Kennedale, Texas—Brady Bacon; Kennedale, Texas—Dave Darland; Jacksonville, Ill.—Mario Clouser; Grain Valley, Mo.—Brett Anderson; Wheatland, Mo.—Jake Blackhurst; Macon, Ill.—Zach Daum.

With two races behind them and three still ahead, the King of Indiana Sprint Series converges on the very quick Lawrenceburg Speedway this Saturday evening. In its twelfth year, the KISS tour crisscrosses the state, scheduled to compete at seven tracks in as many weekends. With two complete events and an unfortunate pair of rainouts, the KISS racers travel to the southeastern corner of the state, just outside of Cincinnati, for their next program.

Coming off his first KISS victory, in the opening race at the Terre Haute Action Track, Robert Ballou leads Dave Darland, the Gas City race winner, by just 24 points. Coleman Gulick is only six points behind Darland, with five-time KISS King Jon Stanbrough four points further back. It’s a situation where no point lead is safe, and there are a number of drivers who could capture their first crown, or second, and one who could still earn his sixth.

However they will need to contend with gritty Thomas Meseraull, who has already tallied two consecutive victories at the ‘Burg this spring. Previous KISS feature winners at the popular oval include Brandon Petty (2005), AJ Anderson (2006), Jon Stanbrough (2007), Nic Faas (2009), Brady Short (2010), and Daron Clayton in a rain-shortened event last year.

KISS sprint car features pay $2,500 to win, and $250 to start. This year, the KISS promoters have also included tow money, where any car that does not transfer to the feature will collect at least $100. Additionally, the point fund has increased to $4,200, with the series champion earning $1,200. Second in points will collect $900, and third through fifth will receive $800, $700 and $600.

Saturday is Scout Night at Lawrenceburg and the front gate will open at 5:00 pm, the pits at 4:00, with hot laps beginning at 6:00 and the opening ceremonies at 7:00. All Scouts in uniform will receive free general admission. Adult tickets are $20, tickets for kids 7 to 12 are just $7, and ages 6 and under are admitted free. Pit passes are $30. In addition to the KISS sprint cars series, the racing program includes UMP modifieds and pure stocks.

Lawrenceburg’s 3/8 mile high banked oval is also host to the World of Outlaws on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. More information about the Lawrenceburg Speedway, including directions and the 2012 schedule is available at www.lawrenceburgspeedway.com.

The next KISS series event will compete at Tri-State Speedway, in Haubstadt on May 27. This year’s King of Indiana will then be crowned after the finale, at Paragon Speedway on June 2.

KISS Points: 1. Robert Ballou 374, 2. Dave Darland 350, 3. Coleman Gulick 344, 4. Jon Stanbrough 340, 5. Jerry Coons Jr. 331, 6. Hunter Schuerenberg 318, 7. Wes McIntyre 316, 8. Thomas Meseraull 297, 9. Justin Grant 285, 10. Jonathan Hendrick 282
2012 KISS SCHEDULE

McMahan Trucks to World of Outlaws Win at Rolling Wheels

Nashville driver dominates ‘The Fast Track’ after getting help from unlikely sources

ELBRIDGE, N.Y. — May 16, 2012 — Attention all CDL drivers: Paul McMahan needs a volunteer.

A former touring Outlaw who has already pieced together rides with four different teams this season, McMahan can’t make it to the next race without a certified trucker.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t met. After all, he picked up his first World of Outlaws win of the season Wednesday at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park thanks to the help of a truck driver he found on Facebook.

“Don’t ask me his name because I don’t know,” McMahan said with a big grin.

With only one crew member – Cody Jacobs – McMahan pieced together his way to the track, around the 5/8-mile oval and out of Victory Lane.

“We don’t even have a four-wheeler,” he said. “We had to bum a ride to get from Victory Lane.”

Despite only having seven spare tires – three right rears, three left rears and one front – and a couple of extra wings, McMahan set the tone for the SPEEDfest event from the drop of the green flag, was patient on a couple of double-file restarts and cruised to his first World of Outlaws victory since Sept. 9 of last year.

“This is where I want to be,” McMahan said. “I want to race with the World of Outlaws. This is where I belong. This is what I want to do. So to come out here and to bounce from car to car is tough to do.

“This is very cool for me. This is one of the top (wins). It’s not as high as my first one, but this one’s really high for me because I got released after one of my best years last year with the World of Outlaws and to come back and show these guys that I can still get the job done is very gratifying.”

After qualifying fifth quick and finishing fifth in his heat race, McMahan, who is currently driving for Tom Buch, advanced to the dash. The dash inversion was a six, starting him on the outside of the front row for the six-lap race. He led the entire race to earn the pole for the 25-lap feature.

It didn’t take long for McMahan to build a giant lead in the main event. With a twister of dust being kicked up around the track, McMahan rocketed to the big advantage on the opening lap. He reached traffic on lap six as David Gravel was the only driver to stay within striking distance.

A caution on lap 10 for the first of two spins by April Wilson bunched the field together and McMahan chose the outside lane on the double-file restart. He again launched to a sizeable margin before getting into traffic on lap 15. Gravel’s throttle linkage broke on lap 18, forcing a caution and sending him to the infield for the remainder of the event.

Chad Kemenah restarted second, but Craig Dollansky roared by on the outside as they exited turn two of the restart and McMahan set sail.

“We really want to congratulate Paul McMahan,” Kemenah said. “He’s an awesome guy.”

The final caution of the race for Wilson’s second spin set up a green-white-checker finish and McMahan was untouchable once again. He built more than a one-second lead in the final two laps en route to the win.

Dollansky held off Kemenah for the runner-up position.

“Paul did a good job and drove a great race,” Dollansky said. “I think he was just actually a little better than I was in the open track. I got close to him on the restarts, but there just wasn’t quite enough room to get by. My hat’s off to him and his team. He did a great job with a lower-funded team and for Paul, it’s great to see him get a win here tonight.”

Danny Lasoski finished fourth with Steve Kinser in fifth. Cody Darrah, who set fast time with a lap of 16.257 seconds, was sixth and Sammy Swindell held onto his World of Outlaws points lead with a seventh-place result after two engine changes during the night. Donny Schatz was eighth, Joey Saldana ninth and Kraig Kinser rounded out the top 10.

Lasoski, Saldana and Swindell each claimed a heat race victory and Justin Barger won the Last Chance Showdown.

By the way, McMahan needs that truck driver by Saturday. He plans to head to Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., for the next World of Outlaws event.

SPEEDfest Notebook
